Getting Your Home Ready for Hip Surgery

In order to help make your at-home recovery easier after surgery, it is important to set your home up in advance of your surgery.
Make it as easy as possible for yourself
Before you head to the hospital for your procedure, make sure your essentials are easy to access and on the floor you will spend the majority of your time. If possible, you should try to limit stair use.
Work with your health care provider to receive additional tips on how to make at-home recovery as smooth as possible, but in general:
· Place items you use every day at waist level. This is helpful so you do not have to bend or reach up.
· Consider using a raised commode or toilet seat and a chair in the shower.
· Put essentials near the area where you will be spending the most time recovering. This could include your phone, tissues, medicine and water bottles.
For the first one to two weeks, you may need assistance bathing, using the restroom, cooking and exercising. If a trusted family member or friend is not available, ask your health care provider about having a trained caregiver come into your home to help with recovery.
Other items that may be helpful to have on hand are reachers, shoehorns, a shower sponge with a longer handle and mobility aids, such as a cane, crutches or walker.
