Puffy Eyes: What Can Help
- Feb 3, 2026
Waking up with puffy eyes or under-eye bags is common. Fluid can pool around the eyes overnight, and thin eyelid skin makes even mild swelling noticeable. The good news is in many cases, puffiness improves quickly with simple, gentle care.
Why Eyes Look Puffy in the Morning
Morning under-eye puffiness usually results from fluid retention, not true inflammation.
Common contributors include:
-
Gravity and sleep position. Lying flat allows fluid to collect around the eyes.
-
Salt or alcohol intake. Both can increase fluid retention.
-
Poor sleep quality or allergies.
-
Age-related changes. Weakened tissue support allows fluid to pool more easily.
Unlike inflammatory swelling, morning puffiness is often soft, non-tender, and improves within hours, especially with cooling and gentle drainage.
Why Cold Works for Inflammation
Cold helps reduce puffiness by:
-
Temporarily narrowing blood vessels
-
Slowing fluid movement into tissues
-
Improving the appearance of swelling
Important: cold should be cool, not freezing. Applying ice directly to skin can damage the delicate eye area.
Skin safety tip: Never place ice or frozen objects directly on bare eyelid skin. Always use a protective layer and limit exposure time.
A 10-minute Morning De-puff Routine
Minute 0–3: Gentle cooling
Apply a cool (not frozen) eye compress to closed eyes.
Options include:
-
A reusable cooling eye mask designed for consistent temperature control
-
A clean washcloth cooled with tap water
A reusable cooling eye mask can be a safer, more consistent option than improvised ice packs, helping reduce puffiness without over-cooling the skin.
Minute 3–6: Caffeine-containing eye product
Lightly apply an eye product formulated to support the appearance of puffiness.
Caffeine may help by:
-
Temporarily tightening blood vessels
-
Reducing visible fluid accumulationSkin tip: Use your ring finger to tap—not rub—the product into skin.

Minute 6–10: Gentle lymphatic technique
Light massage can encourage fluid movement away from the eye area.
Try this technique:
-
Start at the inner corner of the under-eye.
-
Using very light pressure, sweep outward toward the temple.
-
Continue down toward the ear and side of the neck.
-
Repeat 5–10 times per side.
Pressure should be feather-light. The goal is to guide fluid, not push or stretch skin.
What to Avoid Doing
-
Do not press hard or stretch eyelid skin
-
Do not use frozen spoons or ice cubes directly on skin
-
Do not over-massage; more pressure is not better
How to Prevent Puffy Eyes Tomorrow Morning
Simple habits may reduce recurrence:
-
Sleep with your head slightly elevated
-
Limit salty foods and alcohol in the evening
-
Manage allergies if applicable
-
Stay well hydrated
If puffiness is persistent, painful, red, or affects vision, talk with a healthcare professional. Chronic swelling may signal allergies, sinus issues, thyroid disease, or other medical conditions.
Final Thoughts
Morning under-eye puffiness is usually temporary and related to fluid shifts during sleep. A short routine using safe cooling, caffeine-containing products, and gentle technique can noticeably improve appearance in about 10 minutes without irritating delicate skin.
