A story of Mayo Clinic history
The warmly human story of a devoted nurse, wife and mother ...
Edith Graham grew up in a frontier family that lived in Minnesota Territory. Her mother was a midwife who inspired Edith’s life-long love of serving people by caring for their medical needs.
Independent and free spirited as a girl, Edith became the first professionally educated nurse in Rochester. She worked in the early Mayo medical practice and taught nursing skills to the Sisters of St. Francis at Saint Marys Hospital. Then she met and married the love of her life, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, and turned her energies to rearing a large family and establishing Mayowood, their country estate, as a center of hospitality. In 1940, Edith Graham Mayo was named American Mother of the Year.
The author of this book is a member of the Mayo family, who brings unique insight and skill in depicting the enduring values of the Mayo Clinic founders.
